Amos Scully

Residency: July-August 2005

"The constructions I make arrive from considerations of absence in our lives. Absence I mean in the primary sense, how we experience life as an individual in relation to society and other aspects of life. Although entrenched in a collective whole we forever remain distinct, an individual. While at Sculpture Space I am making work that explores absence in relation to time, the romanticizing of the past. This desire and yearning, a desire universally throughout time for lives we cannot have. I also work collaboratively with my wife Stephanie Ashenfelder. Our work primarily attempts to sort out the nature of competition in a tongue and cheek manner. Beyond my own and collaborative work, I am simply a lover or object making and material use, so it seems natural that I teach 3D Design. My studio and 1880’s house are in a small town described as "disgustingly quaint" located in western New York State."

While in residency I found new colleagues, freely experimented, realized projects and left the dog at home. Sculpture Space provides able and trusted environment that allowed my daily arrival at the hour I needed to, and leave when I was done. Relaxed expectations combined with impressive fellow residents mixes to make a productive sphere. Utica is not glamorous, but is certainly unique and with most everything needed within reach. As a residency I would certainly say great for those with an easygoing spirit and anxious to work.

Scully received his M.F.A. from The California College of Arts and Crafts and his B.F.A. from The Rochester Institute of Technology.
