Bea Drysdale

"My paper and fabric pieces are dependent on architecture or on another object (chair, table, etc.) to take form in space. This highlights the pieces' relation to the space that they are in. They are dependent on the space just as we are on our natural environment. The pieces are based in a constructivist interest in materials and structures, yet they oppose constructivist principles in their organic energy and reaction to processes such as gravity. Through the color, transparency and fragility of the materials I use, I seek to blend positive and negative space, inside and outside, erotic and austere, emotion and rationality. While the paper and fabric I use are related to gift-wrapping and sewing, I assert their primacy as material itself."

Bea Drysdale received her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2004. She received her BFA in English and women's studies at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Her recent solo shows include Pine, at the Ahrnsbrak Gallery, Wausau, WI and she also recently participated in an international group show, Material Inquiry, at Macalaster College, St. Paul, MN.
