Maria Velasco

Maria Velasco's work is driven by installation and site-specific approaches. At Sculpture Space Velasco investigated text as art and created molds to shape words selected from a poem. She cast the letters in chocolate, and guests were invited to eat the words at her closing works-in-progress reception. Velasco received her BA in Painting from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, Spain and an MFA from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She has exhibited her work at the Soap Factory, Minneapolis, MN, the Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara, CA, the ARC Gallery in Chicago, the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York City and in Kansas City, MO as well as in Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Paraguay and Germany. She has received numerous awards and grants. She is an Associate Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Kansas in Kansas City.
